Francis Ford Coppola Sonoma

2017 Francis Coppola Claret

Sonoma County, California

The 2017 Francis Ford Coppola Diamond Series, Claret.

The City of Sonoma is rich in history and tradtition. The Valley that surrounds it; infamous for producing high quality American Wines. There are a lot of wonderful vineyards and wines produced in this region. The Sonoma Valley wineries are well known for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir primarily. Merlot and Cabernet have also found a home here. Unlike Napa, which is known mainly for Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma has many different styles and varietals.

They produce a large quantity of high quality whites and light to medium bodied reds.  The 2017 Francis Ford Coppola wine is not one of them. It is a premium full-bodied Cabernet based blend of wine or “Claret”.  Claret was a name given by the English to categorize Cabernet Blend wines. (Think Claret Jug Trophy). It is compared to a Bordeaux Blend, the name given by the French. (Red Blends with Cabernet are usually from Bordeaux). Of Course, Meritage the term used here in the States. But this Italian American Cabernet or “Claret”, is expressive, powerful, and alluring.

These Diamond Series Wines are produced in the Sonoma Winery. One would assume most of the Grapes come from their Sonoma Valley Vineyard. But some grapes possibly could come from Napa, and their 2 Geyserville wineries. Both of them,  their other local vineyards.

Wine is Full-Bodied, Bold, Masculine. Has Balanced but Heavy American Fruit and silky French Oak on finish. Francis says they are the pride of the winery, when speaking of his “Diamond Series” wines. And this Coppola Claret is the top of the class. I Love Napa Cabs, and this Sonoma Claret is just a fantastic blend of Cabernet, with added Petit Verdot, and Petit Sirah.

He has experimented  Cab Franc, Malbec and other blending grapes. Very typical of a Bordeaux blend style of wine. If you like big bold reds this Claret is a definite must try !! Check out more of my personal wine profiles @ http://303Corknfork.com.-Auguri.
